Water Treatment vs. Wastewater Treatment Plants

What’s the difference between these two water systems?

Our water systems are quite simple, really. Although the processes themselves might be complex, the cycle of bringing safe water into homes and businesses and draining used water away from them is actually pretty straightforward. You might have heard of two different water treatment systems, and indeed, they do not do the same thing. Let’s take a look at the differences between water treatment vs. wastewater treatment plants.

What Is a Water Treatment Plant?

A water treatment plant processes water from reservoirs, wells, and natural bodies of water like rivers, lakes, etc. The water that runs in these parts is not usually as dirty as sewage, but they do have a lot of contaminants that might or might not be visible to the naked eye. Because of how much sanitizing needs to take place, raw water will undergo a series of steps to separate the water from the solids and to sanitize the remaining filtered water. These steps are coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection.

Once the water goes through the whole process, the clean water can then go through the pipes and into the plumbing of homes, businesses, fire hydrants, water towers, etc. It is the water that comes out of your faucets, garden hoses, etc.

What Is a Wastewater Treatment Plant?

What comes out must drain out. You would be flooded if the water didn’t go somewhere else. The water, now called gray water or black water, now flows through sewage pipes that go to the nearest wastewater treatment plant.

At the wastewater treatment plant, the sewage and sometimes stormwater combined must undergo several significant processes to make it safe for the environment again. Although the processing is much more rigorous than that of water treatment plants, a wastewater treatment plant follows the same formula of removing solids and sanitizing the remaining liquid with chemicals.

Once the sewage has become safe water for wildlife, people, and plants, it returns to the wild bodies of water from whence it came.
