Parking lots, roads, and other such areas have little room for heavy rainfall or snowfall to go. Even if they do, a natural disaster like a hurricane can cause stormwater drainage problems from there on out. There are only so many solutions to stormwater runoff, and one of the best is the stormwater vault. How do stormwater vaults work, and how does Jet Blast Inc. fit into the picture?
What Is a Stormwater Vault?
A stormwater vault is a large, underground container that usually sits under pavements like roads and parking lots. Different companies produce and sell their own versions of underground stormwater vaults, detention, and retention systems, each working in slightly different ways but all based on a couple of principles.
How Do Stormwater Vaults Work?
These principles are the following: the stormwater runoff gathered in the vault can either drain directly into the ground below through a permeable floor, or it can flow into an outlet pipe downstream toward natural waterways. Some models do both. You can also find systems with multiple vaults and an additional basin connected to an outlet pipe.
All systems catch and hold excess stormwater through a catch basin and allow it to drain out gradually, either into the ground or downstream. In the process, they also catch debris from the stormwater, which settles at the bottom of the vault. Some vaults will also filter the stormwater to prevent letting out polluted water into the environment.
When Properties Need Stormwater Vaults
Retention and detention ponds work similarly, but they are above ground and need significant real estate to be effective. Underground stormwater vaults take advantage of vertical space and are more efficient for crowded settings. They also can be more affordable than permeable pavements, potentially saving money.
Stormwater vaults also work great for steep areas, where stormwater runoff needs regulation to flow at a gradual speed to prevent flooding.
Maintaining a Stormwater Vault
Stormwater vaults work well for many commercial properties, but only if they continue to be clean and free of debris. Jet Blast Inc. can blast and vacuum the sediment using our specialized hydrovac technology in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Northern VA, and Washington, D.C. Along with many other water blasting applications, that is what we are here to do!
