The Basics of Blasting

chlorination and disinfection treatment

Have a blasting project at hand? We’ll walk you through it.

Blasting is a verb that describes shooting an object with something at great force, usually sending that targeted object flying. In the context of industrial cleaning or surface preparation, blasting refers to the use of a particular material, such as water or sand, to blast dirt, rust, and other unwanted materials off of a particular surface or machine. If you are a company that needs to use blasting for cleaning or surface preparation purposes, it helps to know what steps to take for a successful project. The basics of blasting are simple with Jet Blast Inc.!

The Blasting Process

Preparation

The blasting process begins with planning and preparation. Before anything happens to the site, the company must decide on the best method and materials to use for the job. It will also involve scheduling the best time for the project. For example, if a power plant needs to clean its heat exchangers, then it needs to schedule downtime for those machines.

When these plans are in place, the appropriate personnel can prepare the site. It can involve moving items out of the way, protecting other objects in the area, and acquiring the right PPE (personal protection equipment) and training employees on proper safety procedures.

Blasting Method

Blasting is a popular method for cleaning and preparing industrial surfaces because of its power and broad area of coverage. There are many types of blasting methods, but you can mainly categorize them as wet, dry, and wet abrasive, a combination of both. Types of blasting methods include using water, sand, glass beads, dry ice, steel grit, and sodium bicarbonate. Each kind has its pros and cons, and it takes thoughtful research and knowledge of industry standards to see which kind works best for your case.

Cleanup

After the crew comes in and performs the blasting job, the crew will also need to clean up afterward. If it is abrasive blasting, then there may need to be a cleanup of the debris left over. If it is water blasting, then the crew might need to vacuum and properly dispose of wastewater, sludge, etc.
