Public waterworks are part of a municipality’s domain. They form the network of pipes, reservoirs, and drains that allow clean water to get to your faucets and dirty water to return cleanly to its source. Let’s take a look at a basic map of municipal waterworks you likely have in your town.
Reservoirs and Water Towers
Water starts from either a spring, a well, or a natural body of water like a lake or river. Cities or towns take this water and may store it in a reservoir. This reservoir could be available publically for recreational purposes.
If the water is stored in a water tower, which makes water available to surrounding buildings even without power, it has already gone through a water treatment plant.
The Water Treatment Plants
Water treatment plants take raw water and filter out as much debris as possible. They filter the water in different stages, removing visible bits of dirt and debris and later removing unseen bacteria, viruses, and chemicals. Chlorination is the standard method for removing the latter category.
Water Mains
Water mains are main pipes that carry water to people’s homes and businesses. They may lead directly from the water treatment plant or from a water tower.
Stormwater and Sewer Lines
Stormwater and sewage do not go through the same pipelines. They have separate networks: stormwater and sewer lines. Stormwater runoff enters drains along streets and culverts toward natural bodies of water. Meanwhile, sewage goes directly to the nearest wastewater treatment plant.
Wastewater Treatment Plants
Wastewater treatment plants deal with sewage and filter out all impurities until the water is clean enough to re-enter natural waterways.
Maintenance Systems
Manholes allow companies like Jet Blast Inc. to reach storm and sewer lines at strategic intervals. Grates over storm drains keep people from falling in, but let Jet Blast reach in for cleaning when necessary. At Jet Blast Inc., we work behind the scenes to keep all of these municipal waterworks up and running!
