How Do Fire Hydrants Work?

Curious about the role fire hydrants play in public works and how? Find out here.

With the flagrant news of the California wildfires of January 2025, it has become abundantly clear how vital working fire hydrants actually are. Not only are fire hydrants themselves important, but well-maintained fire hydrants are, too. How do fire hydrants work, anyway?

Where Do Fire Hydrants Get Water?

Fire hydrants get their water initially from local natural water sources. In Maryland, it could be from a local river, reservoir, or well. If the fire hydrant is a part of the main city’s waterworks, then it will get its water from the main water line, which is connected to pipelines taking water into homes and businesses. If it is a standalone fire hydrant in a rural area, it will likely get its water from a well or another local water source. There are also standalone fire hydrants in developed areas that have their own water supply.

How Firefighters Use Fire Hydrants

Firefighters can find the nearest fire hydrant to put out fires by their bright colors. Fire hydrants are either red or yellow, usually, so that they are easy to spot. Firefighters are familiar with the parts of a fire hydrant and how to connect the fire truck hose to the fire hydrant. The water will then go through the hose and come out with a strong enough pressure to put out a raging fire.

Maintaining Fire Hydrants

Fire hydrants work partly because they are well-maintained. Without inspections, tests, and repairs, they will fail to provide enough water pressure, have polluted water, or not have enough water. Without working fire hydrants, it’s easy to see that firefighters cannot do their jobs as well.
