How Does Heavy Rain Affect Sewer Lines?

Rain falling on ground

April showers grow flowers, but can they affect your sewer lines?

April is not just one of the months of spring, but it is also famous for its rain showers. While April showers might be great for growing flowers, they could be a problem for deficient sewer systems. Has your local sewer line experienced a backup? Has your home or business been affected? How does heavy rain affect sewer lines, anyway?

Can Heavy Rain Affect Sewer Lines?

Heavy rain should not have any effect on sewer lines. They should be designed to take expected levels of heavier rainfall as well as lighter storms. They are designed to carry a maximum amount of rain or wastewater at a steady rate without damaging pipelines or flooding. Sewer backups can happen, however, if the storm is way beyond the norm or if it is deficient in some way.

How Can Heavy Rain Cause a Sewer Backup?

If the amount of rainwater does surpass the sewer line’s capacity, then the system could overflow or cause sewer backups in homes and businesses. When the water has nowhere else to go, it can flow back into private or commercial sewer lines, which are attached to main water lines. Heavy storms can affect wastewater lines in addition to stormwater lines when the two are connected, which is not the case for all areas.

Stormwater is also more likely to affect private and commercial sewer lines negatively if the sewer lines are not clean. Clogs, even if partial, will keep the sewer system from performing at their full capacity, which can result in flooding on streets and sewer backups.
