Parts of a Storm Sewer System

Jet Blast Storm Drain Cleaning in Harundale, MD

Discover the ins and outs of the mysterious storm sewer here!

Stormwater management systems typically are a series of drains and pipes that lead to natural waterways. They run alongside and directly underneath roads, parking lots, and other manmade structures. Jet Blast Inc. helps to maintain all parts of a storm sewer system through water jet blasting and industrial vacuuming. We’ll discuss all the parts of a storm sewer system right here.

Storm Drain Inlets

Storm drain inlets are the openings that allow rain, melting snow, and more to flow from the pavement or soil into the stormwater drainage system. These inlets can be narrow slots built into the curb, grates, or both.

Catch Basins

Catch basins are concrete containers below the inlets that contain water until it reaches a specific height, at which the water will flow out into the next segment of its journey toward the nearest river or other body of water. Catch basins let debris settle at the bottom, filtering the water as it goes.

Storm Drain Pipes

The filtered water leaves the catch basin into a storm drain pipe. These pipes incline so that the water flows at a ready rate, not too fast and not too slow, so that there is minimal chance of sloshing around even during the heaviest storm.

Main Stormwater Pipelines

This stormwater drain pipe leads toward the main stormwater pipeline, a large pipeline that runs directly under pavement or underground and carries stormwater collectively toward its final destination. Like the first drain pipe, the main one also controls the flow of the water.

Culverts

Along the way, the stormwater might run through a culvert. Culverts preserve the path of the flowing water and the ground above it, which is usually a road. Culverts can also be at the opening of underground stormwater drainage systems.

Manholes

You can usually find manhole covers in the center of roads. They open onto manholes, cylindrical pits for professionals like Jet Blast Inc. to inspect and clean the drainage system at key points.

Stormwater runoff eventually will reach the natural rivers and then into water treatment plants for home and business usage, but those are different stories.
