Sewage Smells Outside My Business

street

Is there a mysterious odor outside or inside your business? Here’s why.

It’s summertime, and you keep noticing a putrid smell somewhere around your commercial property. It could be in the building, specifically in the restrooms, or outside. If you notice sewage smells outside your business, then it could be due to one of these reasons. Below, we will also cover reasons for sewage smells inside your business.

Reasons for Sewage Smells Outside My Business

Broken Sewer Pipe

Broken or cracked sewer pipes underground could cause sewage to leak and smells to arise. The reason we can sense sewage smells so readily is that our noses are capable of picking up very low concentrations of sulfur, which sewer bacteria contain. Sewer pipes can corrode, crack, or break over time due to old age or shifting soil.

Not Enough Rain

When there is no rain for a long time and the sewer and stormwater lines connect, there might not be enough water to carry the sewage down to the sewage treatment plant. The longer it sinks, the more it stinks. With exposure to summer heat, its smell has a higher chance of becoming florid.

Sewer Backflow

Sewer backflow is like backwash. It is the phenomenon of sewage flowing backward into clean water, which can cause water contamination. Similarly, sewage can slosh around in the sewer pipes if it is flowing too quickly down the pipe network, causing smells to rise on a hot summer day.

Reasons for Sewage Smells Inside My Business

Dry P-Trap

The P-trap is the pipe loop that runs directly below a sink that connects to a waste pipe. It traps debris that falls through the sink, prevents clogs, and prevents sewer smells from coming up through the drain. If it is too dry, it is possible for sewer smells to escape indoors.

Sewer Clogs

A clogged sewer system in your commercial business could also cause smells to arise in the building. You can identify the clog based on the drain that floods rather than drains.

Broken or Cracked Sewer Lines

Once again, sewer lines in the building can also crack or break. If so, you will want to address that right away to prevent flood damage.
